Cuba looks back - and forward : " Cuba this week concluded two events, one looking back, and one - ostensibly - looking forward. The 50-year anniversary of the Bay of Pigs invasion was observed with parades and speeches. Victory in the three-day war against a covert US operation to overthrow Fidel Castro, the then-new leader of revolutionary Cuba, is celebrated every year. But 50 years on, a stagnant economy and calls for political reform from a younger generation were an undercurrent during the first party congress in 14 years. What real change will come, and when, remains to be seen. I grew up with Allan Sherman albums and MAD Magazine flexidiscs , so when I first heard Weird Al, I knew I'd found my kind of guy. Justin wrote to me last night: 'You're going to love this. Lady Gaga denied Weird Al the right to release his parody of BORN THIS WAY, only the second time in his career that he's been denied [ed: the other refusal came from Prince]. But he recorded the track at her request as a part of the approval process... the first time any artists has made that request. She summarily passed without comment. So instead of selling a couple hundred thousand or a million copies... he gave PERFORM THIS WAY away for free to his 2 million followers on Twitter.' Robbie Augspurger : " Don’t be fooled — these photos aren’t from another era; they’re current. Robbie Augspurger is a photographer of the bizarre, creating characters that might have been photographed in some desolate town’s Sears Portrait Studio in the 1970s. It all started when he purchased an old light kit. He recalled the days of working in a portrait studio and thought he would try to re-create some of that “awesomely good” portraiture, taking it to a new level. Some of his current projects include “Glamour & Headshots,” “Il mio Capo è il tuo Capo,” and “Mall Art.” He is also a founding member of the Portland, OR-based multimedia art collective Wolf Choir .
